Spreading the Word of the 2011 IBM Impact Conference

By IBM Corporation

Entry information on the Web new page

In a tough business climate, the Web and Social Media team for IBM WebSphere software leveraged social media more intelligently and aggressively than ever before to drive registrations and extend/enhance the value of attending the brand's major conference, Impact 2011. The team delivered on its business goals by spreading the news about the conference through the most effective avenues: attendees and fans. We influenced the influencers - the social media superstars, who each boast a vast reach - to spread the word on our behalf. We armed IBMers and Business Partners to effectively engage in Impact conversations. During the event, we inspired physical and virtual attendees to spread their enthusiasm with words and images. We enabled people to effectively leverage Twitter and blogs to share the value of Impact. Images ran on Livestream, Flickr and Slideshare. Our web-based Social Media Aggregator captured and promoted all of these activities, fostering even greater participation.

Through thorough planning, the introduction of effective new ideas, and rigorous monitoring and adjustment of our tactics, we built up a collective passion that resulted in an explosion of words and images that spread enthusiasm for the conference. We leveraged the reach of 147,000 followers to spread the word via Twitter. This helped us exceed our registration target by 33%. Applying additional social media and live streaming enabled us to extend the conference itself to more than 8,000 viewers from around the world, effectively doubling our event audience. This represented a 580% year-to-year (yty) increase in Livestream views. Viewer locations totaled 92 countries, up 900% yty. On day 1 of the event, tweet volume increased by 370% yty. Impact 2011 inspired 220+ blog posts. This year, 26% more photos were viewed via Flickr. The Tweet Up enjoyed a 130% yty increase in attendance, and a new Social Media Lounge further enhanced the experience of on-site attendees.

January to date, with many activities culminating/available during the week of the conference (4/10-15/2011)
