Yammer is a private, secure enterprise social network that allows people to easily share knowledge, information and ideas with co-workers. After reading an article about Yammer in 2008, Deloitte Australia's innovation team began Yammering as an experiment with no plans for mass adoption. The application was free to try and easy to use and the team thought Yammer might make a nice addition to their email and voice systems, but were unsure if/how it would add value. Over the next year, engagement exploded, including among executives, and use quickly spread across five thousand people and 12 national offices, becoming embedded into core business processes and breaking down communication silos. As use has grown, so have the number of use cases. The "fun experiment" has helped facilitate a social business transformation that continues to deliver significant value across the company.
Yammer is driving business value for Deloitte in many ways:
o Lowering turnover - active Yammer users have an average turnover rate of 2% compared to company average of 15-20%
o Reducing costs, spurring creativity - crowdsourcing programs are lowering marketing costs and improving sales enablement.
o Breaking down silos, improving management visibility - Yammer bridges locations and teams, gives everyone a voice, and allows management to quickly identify and resolve issues with corporate policy.
o Leveraging knowledge and expertise - Yammer helps save time and improve productivity by allowing employees to tap into co-worker knowledge and expertise.
o Accelerating innovation - Yammer improves collaboration among teams - A virtual team developed an iPhone app in record time without formal meetings all via Yammer.
o Improving talent identification - Yammer helps Deloitte identify and reward performance and expertise, reducing recruiting needs.
o Improving mobility - Yammer gives mobile workers better access to information and support from co-workers.
o Building culture - Interest groups within Yammer are building culture and driving corporate initiatives.
