The Starbucks mobile applications are a suite of mobile apps available across the iPhone, Android and BlackBerry platforms that allow our customers to pay for purchases in Starbucks stores using their smart phone.
Understanding that mobile wallet technology was still a few years out from critical mass adoption, we sought to create an application using technology that existed today and would be familiar and easy for our customers to embrace. Our application allows customers to add their Starbucks Card information to the app. With one tap, customers are able to display a 2D barcode in the app that allows them to pay by holding their device in front of a 2D scanner on the counter top in a Starbucks store. It's as simple as scan and go.
In addition to payment, our application allows customers to check their balance, reload their card with any major credit card, view transactions and conveniently track their Stars in the My Starbucks Rewards program.
Our customers have embraced the growing trend of using smart phones and we're excited to elevate customers Starbucks experience by offering the fastest way to pay. By releasing a suite of applications across multiple platforms, we have been able to provide access to the mobile payment program to over 95% of Starbucks customers with smart phones.
Today, customers can use the Starbucks applications to pay in nearly 9,000 locations, including Safeway and Target. Within the first 9 weeks of national launch, we saw 3MM transactions take place and within 6 months over $50MM was loaded on Cards through the mobile channel.
Transforming the way our customers experience and use their Starbucks Card, mobile payment is just one example of how Starbucks continues to create and innovate new ways to connect with customers in the digital space. Currently, the Starbucks mobile payment program is the largest in the United States.
