Spiceworks Users Spread the Word and Create SpiceRex -- Who Says Business Users Can't Be Social?
The Spiceworks Network is a community of over 1 million IT pros from SMBs in over 190 countries that use the free Spiceworks IT management application and online community to manage and collaborate on everything IT. For many, working as the one-man IT shop is a thankless job that is often times only recognized by co-workers when the email server goes down.
In the Spiceworks community, these folks find answers to problems, as well as camaraderie with other like-minded professionals. The members help each other do their jobs, share best practices, rate products and solve technology problems, while providing a valued outlet for collaboration. So much so that community members asserted their own identity by naming themselves "SpiceHeads." Through word-of-mouth efforts referred to as "spreading Spiceworks," SpiceHeads have helped attract 1-in-5 IT pros to the community. SpiceHeads also recently created their own mascot -- SpiceRex, a fierce yet friendly orange T-Rex -- to help represent and promote their fast-growing network that is adding over 1,500 new IT pros everyday.
The impact is clear -- Spiceworks users -- or SpiceHeads are energized and spreading the word, making Spiceworks the fastest growing IT management application in history, attracting 20 percent of the global SMB market. They have created the largest knowledgebase for IT information online - generating more than 25,000 product reviews, creating over 140 custom plug-in applications for the community, and generating over 100,000 discussions while participating in more than 300 discussion groups on everything from "Mobile Computing" to "IT Careers." The SpiceHeads currently support 35 million workers, manage 60 million computers and devices, and spend $180 billion annually on technology products -- or 10% of the global IT market spend.
The SpiceHeads have also created "SpiceRex" -- a community-anointed mascot. The community has SpiceRex travel the world to visit fellow SpiceHeads. In addition, users are creating online ads featuring SpiceRex with the aim of encouraging new IT pros to use Spiceworks. The Spiceworks team plans to run these ads in online advertising campaigns for the product.
