Justin.tv adds a couple thousand new members to their product team... their users
Justin.tv is the largest online community for people to broadcast, watch and interact around live video. With more than 41 million unique visitors per month and 428,000 channels broadcasting live video, Justin.tv is the leading live video site on the Web, enabling users to create real-time connections with others around the world.
With the traffic numbers the site gets daily, the team needed a large scale yet simple to manage solution to reach out to its customers. The constantly evolving product needed a realtime solution to stay ahead of its competitors, but emails and messages boards weren't scaling. In early April 2009, Justin.tv found UserVoice to help the harness the power of its throngs of users. A few days later launched a new innovative way to gather the comments of its users: instant crowd sourcing of ideas and an easy way to reach out and connect with their growing social network.
"UserVoice has changed the way we interact with our users at Justin.tv. Not only did it help us discover what requests users want most, it's also allowed us to leverage community power users to help other users solve problems."
- Emmett Shear, Justin.tv CTO
Justin.tv currently uses two different forums to get to tap into the heart of their community. The first forum is simply a bug reporting system to leverage their users into identifying problems and starting a conversation to update users when the bugs have been fixed. This innovative solution allows Emmett and his team to focus on the biggest bugs and develop a better product.
The second forum was dedicated to a conversation between staff and users about new features. Since launching this system, Justin.tv's forum has captured 700+ ideas but more importantly roughly 20% (160) of all the ideas have been sourced into the their development pipeline and are anywhere from under review to completed.
But not all ideas are right for every company, and Justin.tv has also responded directly to all of their users for ideas that are popular, but do not fit their own vision. After their latest redesign, many of their users voiced dissatisfaction with various aspects. They were able to define three main issues with the design they had not thought would be problems. Instead of wasting hours asking users, or potentially months reverting to the old design, they were able to respond to their users focusing on these three issues to accommodate everyone.
Still, embracing is not about being a "yes" man to your customers. It's about being open and honest and working together to build the best solution for them and the company. Justin.tv has also declined 62 ideas that they did not think benefited the product, but not without first discussing its users' concerns.
Thus far, Justin.tv has reached thousands:
In responding to 30% of users' suggestions, Justin.tv has been able to reach out to 79% of those involved in suggesting ideas.
58% of users returned to give more ideas and continue the conversation.
Since launching the new site five months ago, Justin.tv has built a stronger community by listening to its users. For Justin.tv it's not just about the number of ideas they've generated, or even the number they've actually implemented. It's about proactively reaching out and embracing their customers and making them apart of the success of Justin.tv.
